Here is a full kitchen remodel that we recently finished. We put in new cabinets, floor and a really nice quartz countertop. The homeowner decided to upgrade with a timeless white subway tile backsplash to tie it all together.

Kitchens are the center of the home. It’s where you make the meals you feed your family, make school lunches, where you keep old, family recipes, the beer 😉 and make some of the biggest decisions for your family.

A Great Fireplace Remodel with New Mantle

Everyone loves the 80s right now, but an 80s fireplace isn’t going to make a comeback. We helped one family upgrade their fireplace this week. The original fireplace had the old, modern-style, boxy header with no mantle. Fireplaces deserve a mantle - your home deserves one. So we replaced the original shelves and header and added a beautiful mantle.

I think it changes the feel of the room and it creates a space for your books, photos and family treasures.

A Simple Bathroom Remodel

Summer can be a very busy time for a contractor. Zischke Builders has a ton of projects, large and small, in the works. One small project we recently finished was this bathroom remodel.

Remodeling your bathroom can really enhance your mood. So many of us start or end our day in the shower. I think it makes a huge difference to have a nice space with clean features and good colors!

#Stairsaturday? Probably not a thing!

Starting off the weekend with an update on a staircase (can we make #stairsaturday a thing?). We put up new treads, risers and added a section of railing at the top of the stairs.

I love simple updates that make a house feel new. Updates to a home’s stairs go a long way. You go up and down your stairs many times every day you are in your home. (not just on #stairsaturday - still not a thing).

A Nice Comfortable Front Entry

We just finished some beautiful porch railings and a secure, exterior door installation. It’s hot out now, but I’m sure our customer is going to get a lot of good porch time as things cool off this year.

I am usually on my way to a job most days, but I like to sit on the porch with a coffee or a local beer when I can. How about you? Do you have something you love to do on your deck or porch?

Board-up After Terrible Home Fire

Having done my share a board up work after fires, I can say that protecting your family is paramount. Think prevention and always have your family prepared for the worst. Stay safe, friends.

We got this home boarded up and protected from further damage. Needless to say the whole crew was a little emotional on this one. Thank you to Servicemaster for everything you guys do and for the work.

Expert Wainscoting, Trim and a Partnership!

I’m a finish carpenter by trade and while I love the work I do as a general contractor, my real passion is high end trim carpentry like the den you see in these photos. The wainscoting and crown molding is the work of myself and my friend Bryan Janes, owner of Bryan Janes Construction, who now partners with Zischke Builders regularly.

The wainscoting, the desk, the cabinets and the overhead stationary organizer come together to create a beautiful aesthetic, set off by the layered crown molding and hardwood floors.

This is the kind of luxurious result expert craftsmen can achieve when they set their mind to it. This is the kind of service my company provides because I only work with tradesmen and women who are the best at what they do. You deserve it.

A Custom Master Bath like no other

As promised, check out this newly remodeled bathroom. The tile work, custom his and her toiletries nooks, and custom glass make this a luxury style master bathroom.

I’ve personally always been a fan of benches in standing showers and of having the toilet out of the path of the shower door.

Doing things the 'Hard Way'

My business has always been centered on the needs of the homeowner and working with the BEST professionals. These cabinets were built on the CNC machine you saw a video of last week. Note I said cabinets - NOT doors. This required us to reverse build the cabinets to match the original doors.

This allowed us to match the upper cabinets with those below the counter. This is important because we wouldn’t be able to replace the lower cabinets without breaking the granite counter top because whoever installed it wasn’t a professional. This would have also likely destroyed the backsplash.

I know this is the “hard way” to do things, but If it meets the needs of the customer and fits their budget, then it’s the right thing to do. It’s also a great example of what’s possible when you have serious professional craftsmen working in your home to solve problems others would have walked away from.

Closets never really ever seem big enough, right? The truth is most just don’t use space efficiently. That’s why most of us need a custom closet remodel like this one.

You don’t have to settle with the shelves or hanger space that came with your home. Check out the custom drawers we’ve added, the shelf above the door and the custom space for folded clothing. This isn’t finished, but I wanted to show it to you because I think too many of us just settled for the closets we have and never thought there was a better option.

Fire Restoration in Lansing

Termite Damaged Home Finished and Ready!

In February, I was called to a home that had termite damage so widespread, that several contractors told the homeowners they’d have to tear the home down. Luckily, they called me. I took a look around and found that most of the home could be saved, but it would take precision and patience.

Two months later, my team saved what could not be saved! I’m so proud of everyone involved in this project. We worked with the homeowner to design a new layout. We opened up the ceilings and the floor plan. This not only made their home more modern and spacious, but it saved them money as well.

It wasn’t easy. We had to design plans to hold the siding on the house while we replaced walls underneath, we had to re-frame load bearing walls one stud at a time.

Look at the home now though. I can’t tell you how happy I am for the homeowners and how much heartache and money we were able to save them.

Accidents happen

Monday isn’t your favorite day of the week? At least yours didn’t start with a hole in your garage. I’m glad this home owner called me to get their garage boarded up and protected and I’m glad they weren’t hurt.

Another board up job last night. It’s scary as a small business owner to think of this happening to my business. I’m glad I was able to step in and get the place secure before it got to late. I wish them the best as they get put back together.

Custom kitchen in Michigan log home

Custom Kitchen in a Michigan log home! We had a great time making this dream a reality for our client.

The team really did an incredible job in a beautiful log cabin home last week! Custom counters, cabinets and very custom molding to make the cabinets appear to fit flush into the log walls (BTW, each log is a different size).

I've said it before, no corner is truly 45 degrees and no wall is 100% straight ... but in a log cabin, there are even more variables! Truth be told though, we love it. Just look at the end product!

With that said, we always offer custom counters (custom cut laminate counters can be done for less than big box store tops), custom cabinets and we work with our customers to take their ideas, add our expertise and craft something nobody else has.

Termite damaged home gets second opinion and second chance: Part 3

We’ve made tremendous progress on a home with the worst termite damage I’ve ever seen. Some of you probably remember the home I’m talking about. Several contractors said it would need to be demolished, but we were able to come in with experience and skill to not only restore the home, but work with the homeowner to make this a lot closer to a dream than a nightmare!

Let’s take a look at a corner of the front room that once had a low ceiling and had some very serious damage:

This is what craftsmen do: we solve problems. Now we aren’t done yet. Check out the vaulted ceiling now that we have added drywall and started to cut for lights:

I’m so excited to see this progress that I just had to share it here. I know a lot of my friends reached out and asked how we would fix this!
